Wilkes’ Brown faces former team in first game

Trey Brown
The Wilkes University football program has a storied past dating back 67 years.

As the team begins season No. 68 today, it also starts a new chapter as Trey Brown begins his coaching career with the Colonels when they host Muhlenberg at 1 p.m. at Schmidt Stadium.

“I’m respectful of any opponent we have, but this is a little bit different one for me because I know their personnel.

As coincidental as it may seem, Brown starts his tenure facing the program he spent the previous four years with. In a classic teacher versus pupil matchup, Brown squares off against longtime Mules coach Mike Donnelly, who is starting his 18th season as the Muhlenberg coach.

Brown, who resides in the Lehigh Valley, said he still talks to Donnelly frequently as a mentor and friend, but they have not had much contact in the last four to six weeks leading up to the game. Donnelly has led the Mules to 10 postseason appearances in the last 14 years and they enter today ranked No. 18 in the country by the Sporting News, including three of the four seasons Brown was on the staff.

“I’m respectful of any opponent we have, but this is a little bit different one for me because I know their personnel. I know schematically what they like to do. And I have tremendous respect for what they’ve been able to do during coach Donnelly’s tenure there,” Brown said. “On one hand, I’m super excited to get going, and on the other hand I’m very respectful of the challenge we have in front of us. “
