Widener Football - Bennet named Fall Middle Atlantic Conference Scholar-Athletes

Chester, PA – Senior student-athletes Chris Garrity (Glenolden, Pa) and Michael Bennett (Maple Glen, Pa) were named Fall Middle Atlantic Conference Scholar Athletes for their respective sports.

A senior student-athlete from each of the fall sports were recognized for their strong academic and athletic performance. Garrity represents the league as the men’s cross country recipient, while Bennett was selected as the league recipient for the football programs.

Garrity led the No. 18 Widener to its first-ever trip to the NCAA Cross Country Championships as a team, where the Pride finished 20th in the country. He was recently named to the Philadelphia Inquirer Men's Cross Country Academic All-Area team for the maximum third time in his career. Since becoming eligible in his sophomore year, the senior finance major has also been named to the academic all-area teams during the spring semesters for track and field as well.


He finished second at the Middle Atlantic Cross Country Championships this past November for his fourth straight all-league honor. The senior has also been named to the MAC All-Academic Team for the second consecutive year. In addition, he was named to the MAC Academic Honor Roll this year for a seventh time. Garrity was named third team CoSIDA Academic All-America and Capital One CoSIDA Academic All-District last year.

Bennett led the conference with 21 punts inside the 20-yard line. He finished the season with a six-game streak of at least two punts pinned inside the 20-yard line. The senior was part of the No. 11 nationally ranked Widener team that won its 20th Middle Atlantic Conference Championship and captured its 12th undefeated regular-season. In the conference championship-clinching win over Delaware Valley, Bennett put five punts inside the 20-yard line.

He was recently named to his first Philadelphia Inquirer Football Academic All-Area team. The senior was also named to his first Academic All-MAC team, as well as his first appearance on the CoSIDA Academic All-America second team. He represents the proud tradition of Widener Athletics, as he is the 52nd Academic All-America in school history and seventh student-athlete honored from the football team. For his performance on the field, Bennett was tabbed Honorable Mention All-MAC in November.
