Widener Football - Pride's Michael Bennett named second team Academic All-American

Chester, PA (Dec. 2, 2014) – Senior punter Michael Bennett (Maple Glen, PA/La Salle College HS/Ursinus Coll.), who has enjoyed a solid career on and off the field, today garnered a prestigious honor in being tabbed second team Capital One CoSIDA Academic All-America.

Bennett becomes the 52nd Academic All-America in school history, tops in the Middle Atlantic Conference, and the seventh so honored from the football team. He is the first since fellow punter Doug Schlack received first-team honors in 2005.

Bennett has proven to be a major weapon with his punting, which led him to be tabbed Honorable Mention All-MAC. He leads the MAC with 22 punts inside the 20 yard line, is seventh with a 32.3 yard average per punt has placed seven punts inside the 10 yard line and four inside the six yard line.

He also had a six-game streak in which he placed at least two punts inside the 20 yard line each game entering last Saturday. This included putting five punts inside the 20 yard line in Widener’s 44-28 November 15 over Delaware Valley that clinched the MAC title.

Among Bennett’s other highlights this season include averaging a season-best 39.0 yards per punt November 8 at King’s. He also averaged 36.8 yards per punt September 20 vs. Albright that included a 50-yard punt.

Widener (12-0, 9-0 MAC), ranked 10th in the country, will be home this Saturday to host Linfield in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament. Game time at Leslie C. Quick Jr. Stadium is noon.
