EDWARDSVILLE – Trailing by seven midway through the third quarter, host Wilkes University rattled off twelve unanswered points including the go-ahead touchdown with 2:14 left in the game and held strong on defense on a late Delaware Valley surge to stun the Aggies 12-7 in the Middle Atlantic Conference opener for both squads Friday night at Schmidt Stadium.

With the win Wilkes improves to 1-1 overall and begins the 2015 MAC slate with a 1-0 record. DVU slips to 1-1 overall and 0-1 in league games through week two of the season.

It marked the first win for the Colonels against Delaware Valley since the 2007 season when Wilkes won 27-24 in Doylestown, Pa. Wilkes’ last victory over the Aggies at home came in 2006 when the Colonels went undefeated in MAC play posting a 14-7 win over DVU.

Delaware Valley took a 7-0 lead after one quarter using a 26-yard run into the end zone to do its damage. Defense rang true through the first two quarters of play as neither team could convert any big offensive plays throughout leading to a 7-0 Aggies advantage heading to the break.

Wilkes cut the lead to one midway through the third quarter when Ryan Dailey hit tight end Garrett Armstrong for a seven-yard pitch-and-catch capping off a 10-play, 72 yard drive for the Colonels. The extra point attempt went wide left leaving the Colonels down 7-6 heading into the final frame of play.

The teams traded possessions before Wilkes began its game-winning drive. Wilkes used the run and pass to move the ball into Aggie territory including Dailey’s 6-for-6 performance through the air during the final drive. Facing a second and nineteen from the DVU 24, Dailey connected with Jacob Brook who rumbled through Aggie defenders and into the end zone putting the Colonels up 12-7 with just over two minutes left in the game.

Wilkes tried for the two-point conversion, but a Dailey pass went incomplete giving Delaware Valley one last possession with a chance to win the game.

From there it was the Wilkes defense that stood tall as DVU used nine plays and two costly Wilkes penalties to move the ball down to the Colonel 14 with :14 left. Three incomplete passes thanks to great coverage in the Wilkes secondary and pressure on the quarterback gave Wilkes the five-point conference victory as time expired on the DVU drive .

Dailey was efficient all night long under center for Wilkes finishing 28-for-38 for 223 yards and two touchdowns. PJ Incremona led the Wilkes ground game posting 93 yards as the Colonels ran for a season-high 147 yards in the contest.

Armstrong enjoyed a career-night for Wilkes receiving recording seven receptions for 67 yards and a score. Aaron Coyne finished with five catches for 61 yards while Brook totaled four receptions for 40 yards and the game-winning grab.

Tanner Stengel recorded his second straight 10+ tackle game finishing with 14 total stops. Jared Powell followed with nine tackles.

Wilkes travels to Lycoming College next Saturday for a 1:30 p.m. MAC matchup with the Warriors in Williamsport, Pa.
