King's Football - Monarchs Hosting Crosstown Rival Wilkes in 20th Mayor's Cup Game

WILKES-BARRE -- One of the fiercest small college football rivalries will resume once again when Wilkes-Barre City schools King's College will play host to Wilkes University in the Mayor's Cup Game Saturday at McCarthy Stadium. Kickoff is at 12:07 p.m. due to the television broadcast by FOX-56.

King's enters the game with a record of 3-6 overall and 3-5 in the MAC while Wilkes is 1-8 overall and 1-7 in the MAC.

Saturday will mark the 20th anniversary of the teams competing for the Mayor's Cup. Instituted with the cooperation of former Wilkes-Barre Mayor Thomas McGroarty and continued today by outgoing Mayor Thomas Leighton, the rivalry has become even more meaningful. It is expected the game will continue under recently elected mayor Tony George.

After King's added varsity football as a sport in 1993, the teams began playing for the Mayor's Cup in 1996. Since then the Colonels have had a 13-6 advantage in Mayor's Cup games.

FAREWELL TO OUR SENIORS
Today's game is the final contest for King's seniors Alex Boron-Magulick, Chris Boyle,James Burke, Justin Burke, Tyler Cruz, Chad Curtice, Dylan Flayhart, Evan Foster,Tom Hehre, Danny Lynch, Michael Martina, Anthony Martuccio, Tyler Mejasic, Gary Poulson, Ryan Singley, Monroe Sherman, and Mark Vetterlein as well as junior Jay Thomas.

ABOUT THE SERIES:
This is the 29th meeting between the teams with Wilkes holding a 20-8 overall series advantage. The Monarchs have won the last two meetings, including a 27-21 last season at Wilkes. The Colonels had won the previous three games from 2010-2012. The last time the teams played at King's the Monarchs pulled out s 35-28 thriller on a blocked punt and touchdown return with 0:08 left in the contest.

THE COACHES:
Monarch mentor Jeff Knarr is in his sixth season at King's and owns a 17-42 career record. Wilkes coach Trey Brown is in his second year and is 3-16.

LAST WEEK:
King's dropped a hard-fought 10-6 decision on the road at Lebanon Valley College. Wilkes, meanwhile, suffered seventh straight loss of the season with a 31-24 defeat at the hands of Misericordia University.

KING'S ON OFFENSE: MULTIPLE-I
The Monarchs are eighth in MAC scoring at 20.1 points per-game and are last in total yardage, averaging 274.2 yards per-game. The Monarchs are seventh with 181.0 passing yards and eighth in rushing at 93.2 yards each contest. Senior quarterbackTom Hehre, is 10th in MAC passing efficiency at 99.8 per-game. He has completed 138-of-240 passes for 1,251 yards with five touchdowns and 10 interception He has also rushed for 162 yards on 82 attempts with five touchdowns. Freshman tailbackGabe Brown owns a team-high 393 rushing yards on 117 carries with four touchdowns. Brown has also caught 10 passes out of the backfield for 47 yards. Junior Zack Funkadds 292 yards on 62 carries with three scores.

Junior Mike Palmer tops the receivers with 50 catches for 574 yards and five touchdowns while sophomore Matt Demarco, a transfer from Division I-AA Monmouth, follows with 41 receptions for 411 yards and one score. Sophomore split end Marquis Miller has 27 catches for 213 yards and two touchdowns while fellow sophomore Tyler Marroni has 12 receptions for 411 yards. Senior Dylan Flayhart chips in with nine for 87 yards. King's offensive line features four returning starters from last season, including senior center Mark Vetterlein, senior tackle Evan Foster, junior guard Andrew Zub, and junior tackle Jake Dever.

WILKES ON OFFENSE: SPREAD
The Wilkes offense is last in scoring in the MAC with a 15.6 points per-game average. The Colonels are fifth in the MAC in total yards with 346.0 yards each contest. Wilkes is second in passing yardage at 265.3 yards while standing last in rushing with 80.7 yards each game. Leading the Wilkes offense is junior quarterback Ryan Dailey who stands sixth in the MAC with a 114.4 passer efficiency rating. Dailey has completed 241-of-397 passes for 2,374 yards with 12 touchdowns and 13 interceptions. A dual-threat quarterback, he has also rushed for 71 yards on 67 carries with two touchdowns.

Pacing the Colonel receivers is junior William Deemer with 50 catches for 591 yards and two scores. Sophomore Aaron Coyne, who missed last week's game, follows with 41 receptions for 489 yards and five touchdowns. Sophomore tight end Garret Armstrong adds 34 catches for 310 yards and three touchdowns while sophomore split end Ryan contributes 29 catches for 243 yards. Leading the Wilkes ground game is sophomore Brandon Latierno with 138 yards on 46 carries while freshman Devon Fink chips in with 118 yards on 47 attempts. Leading rusher P.J. Incremona has 364 yards but the senior has missed the last three games.

KING'S ON DEFENSE: MULTIPLE 3-4
The Monarchs are ranked fifth in total MAC defense, allowing 340.0 yards of total defense per-game. King's is eighth against the run in yielding 177.4 yards while standing second against the pass in permitting 162.6 yards through the air. The group is led by junior linebacker Bobby Russell who ranks fifth in the MAC with 71 tackles with 8.5 tackles for loss, 2.5 sacks, three forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries, one interception, and one blocked field goal. Senior defensive end Michael Martina follows with 53 tackles, 10.0 tackles for loss with 7.5 sacks and two forced fumbles. Senior safety Anthony Martuccio adds 46 tackles with two interceptions and two forced fumbles while sophomore safety Jake Manetti has posted 44 tackles and two interceptions. Senior linebacker Chad Curtice has registered 30 tackles with 5.0 tackles for loss and 2.0 sacks while sophomore linebacker Hassan Maxwell has 29 stops with 2.5 tackles for loss.

Senior linebacker Monroe Sherman has contributed with 26 tackles while senior cornerback Justin Burke and freshman linebacker Bruce Damon have registered 21 tackles apiece. Burke chips in with one interception and seven pass-breaks. Sophomore lineman Jacoby Foresman has netted 20 tackles with 5.5 tackles for loss and 3.5 sacks. Senior cornerback Tyler Mejasic has 19 tackles with three interceptions; sophomore cornerback Justin Foster contributes 18 tackles; senior linebacker James Burke has registered 17 tackles while senior cornerback Tyler Cruz chips in with 16 tackles.

WILKES ON DEFENSE: MULTIPLE 3-4
The Wilkes defense ranks ninth in MAC scoring defense, allowing 35.3 points per-game while standing eighth in total defense in yielding 419.9 yards each contest. The Colonels are seventh against the run in allowing 174.7 yards while ranking last against the pass in permitting 245.2 yards every game. Junior linebacker Tanner Stengel leads the MAC with 120 tackles, including 12.5 tackles for loss and 3.0 sacks. Sophomore safety Isaiah Robinson follows with 69 tackles and 5.0 tackles for loss. Senior linebacker Michael Paskas adds 57 tackles with 1.5 sacks while senior defensive end Jason Ugwu contributes 53 tackles with 10.0 tackles for loss and 3.5 sacks.

Senior defensive back Jared Powell posts 49 tackle with eight pass-breaks while freshman safety Neojoe Lughas has tallied 46 tackles and 3.5 tackles for loss. Freshman linebacker Jordan Stiles has made 38 tackles with two interceptions while junior nose-guard Dominick Ammirato and senior cornerback Tyheed Jackson chip in with 36 tackles apiece.
