CHESTER, Pa. (Sept. 3, 2016) – The Widener University football team dropped its season opener to Rowan by a 19-14 score on Saturday afternoon at Leslie C. Quick Stadium.

Rowan improved to 1-0 by defeating the Pride on the road for the second straight season, while Widener fell to 0-1 out of the gates.

After the Profs got on the scoreboard first courtesy of a Tyler Knighton field goal, Widener had an answer and took its first lead near the end of first quarter. Starting from their own 20, the Pride marched all the way to paydirt on five plays by most notably having senior quarterbackAlex Krivda (Sellersville, Pa.) and junior wide receiver Montrell Hicks-Taylor (Newark, Del.) connecting for a combined 77 yards in the air on three snaps. The wide receiver most notably caught a 19-yard pass for the team's first touchdown of the season at the 1:45 mark.

Widener scored another touchdown to seize control before halftime by successfully executing another 80-yard drive following a Rowan punt. Hicks-Taylor provided the scoring again on a 35-yard rush to give the hosts a 14-3 advantage heading into recess.

The second half, however, belonged to Rowan as the visitors blocked a punt and intercepted the ball three times while not allowing Widener to score over the final 30 minutes of play. The Profs scored consecutive touchdowns when Dante Pinckney connected with Kevin Lenart for a 61-yard reception to close the gap to 14-10 with 7:05 left in the third before finding Zac Frantz for a 21-yard strike on the first play of the fourth quarter to push the visitors ahead.

Despite trailing 19-14 with 3:36 remaining in regulation, Widener had two more opportunities to score a touchdown and regain the lead. Rowan, however, forced two turnovers by stopping Hicks-Taylor a yard short of the chains on a 4th-and-2 situation and intercepting a Krivda pass with 29 seconds to go. Pinckney then took a knee to end the game.

Widener was led offensively by Hicks-Taylor, who finished the game with 108 yards receiving on six catches and an additional 48 yards on the ground while also reaching paydirt twice. His receiving and rushing marks were also team highs. Krivda completed 27 of his 54 pass attempts for 255 yards and one touchdown. Senior captain Steve Gozur (Hatfield, Pa.) made eight tackles, including three for a loss, as well as one sack.

Pinckney ended the contest with 265 yards in the air by completing 17 passes for Rowan. He also threw two touchdowns. Jamel Smith made eight catches for 90 yards, while Frantz and Lenart combined for seven receptions and 139 yards and providing scoring. Defensively, the Profs intercepted five passes with two of them falling into the hands of Shaquille Lee. One of Lee's picks led to a Rowan touchdown.

Widener will take the next weekend off and will return to action when it travels to FDU-Florham on Friday, Sept. 16 at 7:00 p.m.
