MADISON, NJ – Sophomores D’Andre Sapp (Queens, N.Y.) and Donte Harrell (Downingtown, Pa.) each reached paydirt twice on the ground and classmate Justin Hardy (New Castle, Del.) returned an interception for a 90-yard touchdown as the Widener University football team defeated FDU-Florham by a 40-7 score in the Middle Atlantic Conference opener for both schools on Friday evening at Robert Shields Field.

Widener scored 40 unanswered points and at least once in each quarter, which began with beginning with a 6-yard run by Sapp at the 7:34 mark of the first quarter to cap a 12-play, 78-yard drive. The sophomore then continued to rely on the ground game to reach the end zone two more times on one-yard rushes by Sapp and Harrell in the second quarter to take a commanding 19-0 lead into the break.

The Pride kept their foot on the gas pedal on both sides of the ball in the second half and never let up. After junior Joe Fox (Beverly, N.J.) returned a botched punt to the end zone from 11 yards away and Harrell rushed for another one-yard score, the team’s relentless defense put an exclamation point on Widener’s scoring barrage when Hardy intercepted a pass and bolted 90 yards for a touchdown to make it 40-0. FDU-Florham later avoided being blanked in front of its home crowd when John Pelligrini connected with Jagger Green from three yards out with 54 seconds left to play to produce the final outcome.

Harrell led the way with 124 yards on the ground and two touchdowns for Widener, which accumulated 203 rushing yards and held FDU-Florham to negative-six yards rushing. Senior quarterback Alex Krivda (Sellersville, Pa.) was an effective 14-for-19 on his pass attempts and did not throw an interception. He accumulated 195 yards through the air and was sacked only once.

On defense, senior captain Steve Gozur (Hatfield, Pa.) made a team-high six tackles, including two for a loss, while sophomore Jalen Singleton (Browns Mills, N.J.) and Jacob Jones (Philadelphia, Pa.) each recovered a fumble. Hardy broke up two passes in addition to his 90-yard interception return for a touchdown.

Green of FDU-Florham (0-2, MAC 0-1) finished the evening with 284 yards passing. Esaun Mobley was his favorite target and finished with a game-high 132 yards receiving for the Devils. Troy Scales and Tim Brown had six sacks apiece on defense, while Brown also added a sack.

Widener (1-1, MAC 1-0) returns home to face Wilkes on Saturday, Sept. 24 at 1:00 p.m.
