EDWARDSVILLE – Visiting Lebanon Valley College raced out to a 29-0 lead at the half and never looked back holding host Wilkes University scoreless for the first time in three years posting a 36-0 victory in both teams Middle Atlantic Conference opener Saturday afternoon at Schmidt Stadium.

Wilkes falls to 0-2 overall and 0-1 in league play following the home debut defeat. LVC improves to 1-1 and 1-0 in MAC play.

LVC wasted little time moving the ball down the field using the run game as its main weapon. The Dutchmen went 16 plays and 50 yards using over eight minutes on its opening drive before settling for a 22-yard field goal from Marcus Brown to go up 3-0.

Wilkes first drive of the game ended quickly when Shane Deemer lost the handoff from Jose Tabora fumbling the ball back to LVC at its own 20 yard line. The Colonel defense held strong forcing a three-and-out and kept points off the board when Brown’s 37-yard attempt  went wide left.

Wilkes saw its next drive go three plays before opting to punt. The snap would fly over the head of punter Bobby Nye and into the back of the end zone resulting in a safety and a 5-0 LVC advantage with 3:31 remaining in the first quarter. LVC used the ground game again this time Jon Jones cruising in from four yards out after a four-play, 32-yard drive. LVC led 12-0 after one quarter.

After another punt from Wilkes, quarterback Tyler Sterner found a streaking LVC receiver down the left sideline for the visitors second touchdown of the day pushing the advantage to 19-0 early in the second stanza.

The LVC offense received another short field when Wade Rippeon’s pass was picked off inside the Colonels 20 yard line. Two plays later Sterner dove in from one yard out to give LVC a 26-0 lead. Brown added his second field goal of the game late in the frame to give LVC a 29 point advantage at the break.

LVC added one more score in the third on a 55-yard touchdown pass from Sterner to close out its scoring in the contest.

Wilkes continued to struggle over its final four possessions of the game with two turnovers (fumble and interception) and a punt before the clock expired in the fourth.

Rippeon finished 12-for-23 passing for 89 yards and two interceptions entering the game midway through the first quarter for starter Jose Tabora. He also added 21 yards rushing on six attempts.

Sterner led LVC passing for 124 yards and two touchdowns while also rushing for another score. LVC accounted for 224 yards rushing and two touchdowns on the day.

Jacob Brook and Bud Moyer led the Colonel defense with 14 tackles each. Chance Hayes finished with six tackles and one pick for LVC.

Wilkes has a quick turnaround hosting Delaware Valley (2-0, 1-0 MAC) on Friday night at Schmidt Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m.
