Rowan University announced its 2014 football schedule on Thursday and it kicks off with a night game against a new potential rival from across the Delaware River.

The Profs, who are ranked 21 in The Sporting News' NCAA Division III preseason poll, will start the 2014 season with a nonconference game against Widener at 7 p.m. in Glassboro. Widener, which is in Chester, Pa., is No. 25 in the preseason poll.

“Our opener against Widener will generate a lot of local attention since we are only a bridge away,” head coach Jay Accorsi said in a statement. “My hope is that we can continue this game for the long term in the future and develop a little bit of a rivalry.”

The schedule doesn't get any easier after that as the Profs will go on the road for three straight games - at Framingham State; at Wesley, which is No. 5 in the preseason poll; and, after a bye week, at Cortland State.

“After the Widener game we travel to Framingham State and Wesley which both participated in the NCAA Tournament last season,” Accorsi said. “We were Framingham State’s only regular season loss last year, so I know they will be ready for us this year. Wesley will be joining the NJAC in 2015 and our games in the past have always been exciting. They are ranked high in all the preseason polls.”
