ANNVILLE, PA – The Wilkes University football team has been picked to finish eighth in the annual Middle Atlantic Conference Preseason Coaches’ Poll released by the conference office Friday afternoon.

The Colonels were selected eighth out of the ten-team conference with 30 total points.

Defending co-MAC champion Lycoming took the top spot with 77 total points and five first-place votes. Delaware Valley followed in second place with 68 total points and one first-place vote. NCAA qualifier Lebanon Valley garnered the third spot with 65 points and four first-place tallies. Widener (58 pts.), Albright (48 pts.), King’s (40 pts.) and Stevenson (38 pts.) were selected fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh respectively, while Misericordia (19 pts.) and FDU-Florham (10 pts.) followed Wilkes in ninth and tenth.

Head coach Trey Brown takes over a Colonels program looking to build off a 4-6 mark from a season ago with a solid core of returners and a host of talented newcomers in 2014. Preseason All-Americans Omar Richardson (Sr./DB) and Nick Dawson (Sr./FB) lead their respective sides of the ball for the Colonels who welcome back 15 starters (six on offense/nine on defense).

Wilkes opens its 2014 campaign Saturday, September 6 when the Colonels welcome Muhlenberg College to Schmidt Stadium at 1:00 p.m. Wilkes starts MAC play and continues its home stretch in week two hosting local rival Misericordia on September 13 before making its first road appearance September 20 at Delaware Valley. Homecoming is set for September 27 when Wilkes clashes with Lycoming.
