The day sophomore Alex Stewart (Pittsgrove, NJ) had for No. 13 Widener's football team earned him national recognition in being picked to the D3Football.com Team of the Week.

Stewart set a school record and tied an NCAA mark with three blocked punts, two of which were returned for touchdowns by senior Ameer Sorrell (Port Norris, NJ), in Widener's 59-21 victory Saturday over Wilkes. To put that into perspective, no player in the 134-year history of Widener's program had more than two blocked punts in a season.

Stewart joins the NCAA record book along with Matt Sheridan of Moravian vs. King's on September 17, 2005, Don Rodgers of Sewanee vs. Rhodes on October 19, 2002, Andy Waddle of Wittenberg vs. Urbana on September 1, 2000, Scott Lunsford of Maryville (TN) vs. Rhodes on September 26, 1998 and Jim Perryman of Millikin vs. Carroll (WI) on November 1, 1980.

Earlier this week, Stewart was picked the Middle Atlantic Conference and ECAC Southeast Player of the Week.

It has been yet another solid year to date for Widener, which is ranked 13th according to the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) and 16th by D3Football.com. The Pride (6-0, 5-0 MAC) are undefeated this late in the year for the second time in three seasons, have outscored their opponents 90-13 in the first quarter and still have not yielded a third-quarter point.

The Pride are second in the country in red-zone defense, second in rushing defense with 46.2 yards allowed per game, second in turnover margin, fourth with 7.5 points allowed per contest and sixth with 224.2 yards per game.

Widener returns to the field Saturday at Lycoming (5-1, 4-1) for a 1:30 pm contest in Williamsport, PA.
