CHESTER, Pa.  – On Saturday, the Widener football team suffered a 24-10 setback to Rowan in its 2015 home opener at Leslie C. Quick Stadium. The Pride open the season 0-1, while the Profs begin 1-0 in a rematch of last year’s opener at Rowan.

Neither side found the scoreboard in the first quarter, as the two sides combined for six punts in the quarter alone. But things would change as the play moved into the second quarter. Widener started its first drive 54 seconds into the period at its own 33 yard line. Seven plays and 67 yards later, junior quarterback Seth Klein(Wernersville, Pa.) found junior wide receiver Max Kutler (Cranbury, N.J.) in the right side of the end zone for a 30 yard score and the Pride’s first touchdown of the season.

With 1:32 remaining in the half, Rowan’s Tyler Knighton would successfully kick a 41-yard field goal after a 23 yard drive that started at the Pride’s 47 yard line. In the ensuing drive, the Blue and Gold marched down the field 59 yards on eight plays including Klein and Kutler hooking up for a 15-yard reception and Klein finding senior wide-out Philip Ragona (Oceanside, N.Y.) for a 19-yard gain. Senior kicker Ryan O’Hara (Royersford, Pa.) capped off the drive with a 30-yard attempt to extend the advantage back to seven points and give Widener the 10-3 lead heading into the intermission.

After deferring in the first, the Profs received the opening kickoff of the second half. Rowan rattled off 21-unanswered points in the second half to put away the Pride. The visitors were able to put together six plays, including two of 31-yards each to knot the score at 10-all. On the second play of the drive, quarterback Dante Pinckney completed a 31-yard pass to Jahsiem Rover. Four plays later, running back Withler Marcelin found a seam to the outside and finished in the end zone for the 31-yard rush.

Two drives later for Widener, it turned the ball over on downs at the half-yard line. This set up a 99-yard score for the visitors with the touchdown coming via an 82-yard run by Marcelin with 17 seconds left to play in the third quarter.

Rowan tacked on another touchdown in the fourth quarter as Klein was intercepted at the 22 yard line by Bobby Barbieri who returned it into the end zone for the pick-six with 11:33 remaining in the contest.

The Pride were unable to put anything together the rest of the game, as the scoreboard read 24-10 in favor of Rowan at the end of regulation.

Klein finished the contest 33-54 for 264 yards with one touchdown and one interception. He also rushed 15 times for 25 yards. Ragona registered eight catches for 53 yards, which led all players. Defensively, senior defensive lineman Stacey Sunnerville (Freehold, N.J.) accrued 7.5 tackles and a sack.

On the other side, Marcelin carried the ball 27 times for 164 yards and two touchdowns. Pinckney finished 9-12 for 61 yards. Darren Dungee led all players with 12.5 tackles.

The Pride look to bounce back in their Middle Atlantic Conference opener next Saturday, Sept. 12 when they welcome in Kings to Leslie C. Quick Stadium. The opening kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
