A MACfb File Phoro
EDWARDSVILLE – Widener University’s Blaine Price caught nine passes for 112 yards and one score to push the visiting Pride past host Wilkes University 27-7 Saturday afternoon in a Middle Atlantic Conference matchup on Homecoming at Schmidt Stadium.

With the loss Wilkes slips to 1-4 overall and 1-3 in league play. Widener improves to 3-2 overall and 3-1 in MAC contests.

Neither offense could get things going early in the game as Widener settled for a Ryan O’Hara 21-yard field goal to give the Pride a 3-0 lead with 10:53 on the first quarter clock after a five play drive stalled in Wilkes territory. The teams traded punts throughout the first quarter and into the second before Jabre Nicholson caught a two-yard fade pass from Seth Klein to push the Widener lead to 10-0 following an O’Hara extra point with 12:03 left in the half.

Wilkes managed to move the ball down deep into Widener territory thanks to a Ryan Dailey to Garrett Armstrong 51-yard connection moving the Colonels to the Pride 14. From there Dailey was picked off on a second and five in the end zone ending the scoring hopes for the Colonels.

After another Widener punt, Wilkes moved deep into the Pride territory using short passes to do its damage. Dailey hit William Deemer and Aaron Coyne twice on the drive to move Wilkes to the Pride 18. After a loss of two yards on a rush, Wilkes went to the air on third and fourth down only to see the passes fall incomplete ending the drive on downs.

Widener tacked on another O’Hara field goal, this time from 28-yards out to give the Pride a 13-0 lead with 7:36 left in the third quarter.

The Wilkes defense brought life back into the stadium when Jordan Stiles intercepted a Klein shovel pass and returned it 29 yards for the Colonels first score of the contest. Carl Von Glahn added the extra point and Wilkes trailed but just six at 13-7 with 3:44 left in the third.

Both teams traded punts to start the fourth before Widener went to Price several times on an eight play, 92-yard drive that resulted in a Klein to Price 27-yard hookup for the score. The Pride lead grew to 20-7 following the Widener extra point with just 4:05 left in the fourth quarter.

Widener added another late score with under a minute to play to seal the 27-7 road victory in front of a soggy and cold Colonel Homecoming crowd.

Dailey finished 24-for-42 for 235 yards, his fifth straight game of at least 220+ yards to start the season. Armstrong led the Wilkes receivers with four catches for 67 yards. Coyne added six receptions for 55 yards while Zach Bogoly enjoyed his finest outing of the year hauling in five passes for 48 yards.

The Wilkes ground game struggled to find holes all game rushing for negative yardage against the Widener front four. Dailey was also sacked a season-high nine times under pressure most of the game.

Klein went 30-for-51 through the air for 272 yards and one score. Widener also struggled on the ground as the Wilkes defense held the Pride to just 63 total yards. Price led five Widener receivers who caught at least four passes in the game.

Wilkes travels to Reading, Pa. next Saturday for a MAC matchup with No. 25 and unbeaten Albright College (4-0, 3-0 MAC). Kickoff is slated for 1:00 p.m.
